Rescaled is a European advocacy group that collaborates with Wayback. Together with partner organisations from 7 European countries, we share a commitment to rethink the sentence. The prisons of the future must help people build meaningful and dignified lives after imprisonment, while at the same time being included in and contributing to society.
Wayback is a user and interest organization – working with and for our members. After many years of experience in supporting convicts in the transition between prison and society, we know what it takes for this to be possible for the individual. We know where the shoe presses.
In recent years, several small and local low-security prisons have been closed in Norway.
They have been replaced with larger high-security prisons, located in forest and industrial areas.
Prisons that are characterized to a greater extent by retention than rehabilitation.
What are the consequences of this policy? And is this what the future correctional service should look like?
We take a critical look at the development we have seen in the Correctional Service in recent years. Through our collaboration with Rescaled, we want to shed light on how we in small prisons can better accommodate each individual inmate, and make the way back after imprisonment easier. Through knowledge acquisition, political influence and interdisciplinary cooperation at national and international level, we will contribute to new thinking in the Correctional Service.
The prisons of the future should be small and adapted prison units, which constitute a resource in local communities. This is what we call the Rescaled model.
